CA Drivers License Digital Redesign
Project Type: UI/UX Design and Research
Role: Solo-Project
Timeline: February 2021
Tools: Adobe XD, Illustrator, After Effects
Overview: A design for a mobile version of a California driver's license. The project focused on creating 2 states, one with full identification information, and the other for quick age verification exchanges.
01 Two-State System
Condensed into two states to keep the system efficient and easy to understand.
02 Informational Hierarchy
Well-structured informational hierarchy allows for quick skimming to keep exchanges efficient.
03 California Style
Creating a visual style that invokes the feelings of living in California, staying true to the essence of the state.
Golden State Geometry
A mood board designed for 2 potential style explorations. California is distinctly divided between its breathtaking oceanside vistas and urban metropolized downtown.
Sketchwork
Based on the above mood boards, I began to draft potential designs for use in the first iteration. I explored illustrations that invoked feelings of California as well as varying ways to switch between the two states.
Wireframing
A basic wireframe exploring a swipe-based state swapping system. Later scrapped due to concerns over usability with an older generation less familiar with common gestures. This iteration also explore potential informational hierarchy.
Design Exploration
Style #1
One thematic meant to focus and build upon the Los Angeles skyline, keeping yellow as a central motif highlighting the state's beloved sunshine.
Style #2
Another thematic with more organic imagery meant to focus on the scenic oceanside vistas found widely throughout the state as a whole.
Conclusion
An effective 2 state system that captures the thematic style of California. Being careful to not over-design the project helps maintain its accessibility across the wide target audience and certainly proves a valuable lesson for all future projects.
